Contacting George AFB approach, we pulled into a normal traffic pattern, flew in close formation down the runway at 1500 feet AGL, pulled hard left at 2-3 g’s and configured our aircraft for landing. Making the turn to final, lining up on approach and finally flaring to touchdown. We rolled to the end of the runway where we pulled off and had our ground guys put pins in the gun and the gear for safety. I signaled to raise our canopies together and we taxied the USAF’s newest ground attack fighter to the chocks.
Walking back to the ready room, dressed for flight in our flight suits, g suits and helmet bags, I would never have dreamed that I had just flown a tactical fighter for the last time. Maybe it was just as well. How could you ever really consciously ‘quit’ such an incredible experience or job.
